The Wightlink Raiders have strengthened the squad further today with the signing of Great Britain junior international Owen Griffiths.
The talented 18 year old forward played in the same World Championship team as Simon Hobbis and joins after two seasons in the NIHL with the Cardiff Devils. Last year he posted impressive stats of 12 goals and 24 assists from 26 matches while still only 17. He also made 5 Elite League appearances for the Devils.
Speaking about his new signing head coach Jeremy Cornish says signing Owen was too good an opportunity to miss.
“We are very pleased to have signed him this late in the summer and he came on recommendation from current Raider Simon Hobbis. Simon and Owen are teammates with team GB and it’s fantastic to see another young player choosing to come and advance their career with our club. By securing the services of Owen it just goes to show how far our club has progressed during our time in the NIHL and many players have used our club to reach the higher divisions here in the UK.
Owen is a very skilled forward and will definitely improve our forward lines. He has good hands and excellent speed and that will benefit us both at home and on the road. He is moving over to the island and will become a instant fan favourite because of his work ethic and attitude. I know he is excited to get started and I can’t wait to see him in a Raiders shirt.”
The Raiders 19 man squad will start their campaign next weekend with an EPL Cup game with Milton Keynes Lightning on Saturday before travelling to Gosport to take on Solent Devils on Sunday.
