Coach’s Corner

Coming down to the wire.

Well things couldn’t get any more exciting down the stretch, the top three teams are close and as Wightlink Raiders players and fans that’s a good thing. This time last year we were locked into third place and playing meaningless games. I’ve told the guys since the start of the year that there’s no sense playing at this level unless we are in the hunt to win trophies. We’ve won the Southeast Cup and with three games remaining, the league title could come down to our last road game in Chelmsford.

This past weekend we played Chelmsford at home and Milton Keynes on the road. Saturday night we had one of our best games of the season, everyone played there part and we came out with a much needed two points. Sunday we travelled to Milton Keynes and that is always a tricky place to go, they have a young team and work extremely hard. We had a slow start but after the buzz from the night before I’m not surprised we came out a bit flat. After the first period we found our feet and completed the four point weekend.

We only have one game this weekend, but it’s going to be a big one, we travel to Invicta on Sunday and that’s a place we have only won a couple times since I’ve been coaching the Raiders. I have a couple of ideas on how we need to play and if we stick to the game plan and work hard we can give ourselves a shot at winning. Invicta have been hot and cold all year, but with Moffet back in net, they look to have found some form. They are very offensive, but give up a lot of shots, so we need to take our chances when we get them.

This week in training we won’t be changing much, we just need to keep our focus for these last three games. Even if we don’t win the league it’s important that we keep good form heading into the playoffs.

On the injury front, Damon is going to be out for the remainder of the year with a broken hand and James Smith is feeling a lot better and we’ll see how he’s feeling towards the end of the week. I know these injuries have come at a bad time, but this is why we have the extra bodies and we have a couple guys that really need to step up if they want to play.

Have a good week and if you’re not going to the game in Invicta, make sure you keep an eye out on Twitter!
