Coach’s Corner

The league looks wide open.

Saturday we faced the Bracknell Hornets and even though we didn’t have our best crowd of the season, I would like to thank those who did brave the weather and make the trip down to the rink. Bracknell are always a tricky team to beat and I think the guys did a good job on Saturday. With a new addition in James Smith, I felt the lines were well balanced and we even have a solid fourth line to play. This is the deepest team we have had here and I’m hoping with the added players it keeps players honest and hardworking down the stretch.
The guys once again added in two off-ice workouts before training sessions and they will continue to do so until the end of the season, this shows the guys aren’t afraid to put in a little extra work in order to stay in the hunt for the league title. With Romford losing on Saturday, I feel the league is wide open and I think it’s pretty exciting for both the players and fans to be playing important games during the second half of the year. It gives us a bit of pressure knowing that we need to win every game we can in order to keep up around the top of the league.
This Saturday we Play Romford in support of the Applegate Breast Care Unit, we will be wearing a special one-off pink jersey with all proceeds going to the unit. Not only is this a great idea and a worthy cause, it’s also the clubs biggest game of the season. Romford currently sits in first place and this game could go a long way in seeing who wins the league. We have developed a fierce rivalry with them and we will be looking to continue our good home form, but we need to fill Ryde Arena with loud Raiders fans. When we go to Romford we don’t get the warmest of welcomes and I’m sure they will be bringing a fair amount of travelling support. Also, I’ll be wearing a pair of pink hockey gloves, you can bid for them on our forum and then after the game the whole team will sign them. I’ve played in a few of these types of games over the years and I’ve never seen a pair of gloves auctioned off. I think it’s a great opportunity to get a little bit of Raiders history and raise money for an amazing cause.

Let’s get the arena packed this Saturday, the league is on the line.
